We've got a few things to do this year, some cycling and some family stuff. It's going to result in us closing Superscrews between 4th April -> 30th June 2024. It's unfortunate and we might...
Purlin, also known as Batten, screws are a New Zealand building industry staple. Initially used to fix purlins to rafters where nails were not providing a strong enough wind uplift connection they are now used for everything from framing, fencing and furniture projects to decking and boxing (although socket head screws are better for this as they do not fill with concrete).
Purlin screws normally have a countersinking (CSK) bugle head with a 5mm Hex drive, though similar screws in Torx drive are available (see our T Series), and a countersinking head. They have a coarse wood thread over normally 1/2 to 2/3 of their length and a Type-17 self drilling tip. The most popular length is 100mm and they come in a variety of lengths from 40mm to 200mm.
The common garden variety is manufactured from coated hardened steel, stainless steel ones are also available (see below) and sometimes seen in heavy commercial decking in public wharves and the like.
Yes. You can get the same screw with a zinc coating unsuitable for exterior use but most are Galvanised or modern equivilent coated. The Superscrews Purlin screws are coated in a multilayer galvanised equivilent rated to Class 3 plus.
We sell a lot of these, and sometimes find it hard to keep them in stock. Below is what we currently have in our NZ warehouse ready to ship:
